Outlook SMTP delivery response

Understand Outlook 550 5.7.501: Spam abuse detected

Microsoft blocked the sending account because its systems detected spam activity.

Problem description

A representative response is:

550 5.7.501 Spam abuse detected.
Is this temporary or permanent?

Do not keep sending. Resolve the account-security and abuse issue before asking Microsoft to restore service.

What this response means

550 5.7.501 Access denied, spam abuse detected means Microsoft has banned the sending account, not merely rejected one recipient. DNS changes alone cannot lift the ban.

Fix it

  1. Stop automated and user sending from the affected account.
  2. Review sign-in logs, inbox rules, connected applications, forwarding, and sent items for compromise.
  3. Revoke active sessions and tokens, reset credentials, require strong multifactor authentication, and remove malicious rules or applications.
  4. Find and stop the traffic that triggered the action; clean recipient lists and unsafe automation before restoring access.
  5. Contact Microsoft Support through the tenant’s normal support channel and provide the full NDR, affected account, timestamps, and completed remediation.

Do not create a new account to bypass the restriction. That leaves the original compromise or abusive process active.

What MailFixIt can check

MailFixIt can evaluate public authentication records as supporting evidence, but it cannot inspect or unban a Microsoft account.

After Microsoft restores sending, verify SPF, DKIM, and DMARC and send a small controlled test before returning to normal traffic.

Frequently asked questions

What does Outlook 550 5.7.501: Spam abuse detected mean?

Microsoft banned the sending account after detecting spam activity. The account must be secured and its sending privilege restored by Microsoft.

Can MailFixIt prove this entire bounce from public DNS?

No. The current checker can evaluate selected public DNS configuration, but it cannot recreate recipient state, credentials, reputation, message content, or a historical provider SMTP decision.
