Problem description

A representative response is:

550 5.1.10 Recipient does not exist.
Is this temporary or permanent?

This is permanent for the submitted address. Correct or provision the recipient before retrying.

What this response means

550 5.1.10 Recipient not found means Microsoft could not match the SMTP recipient to a valid destination object. It does not mean the sender failed SPF or DKIM.

Fix it as the sender

  1. Confirm the full address with the recipient through another channel.
  2. Start a new message and type the address manually instead of resending the failed item.
  3. Remove the stale Outlook autocomplete suggestion if it keeps returning.
  4. Stop retrying a list address until its owner confirms that you may send to it.

Fix it as the recipient administrator

  1. Confirm that the mailbox, group, contact, mail user, or alias exists in the correct tenant.
  2. Check its primary and proxy SMTP addresses.
  3. If identities are synchronized, verify that the object and address reached Microsoft 365 without an error.
  4. Use message trace and the complete NDR to see which recipient value was rejected.
